Hello Everyone - I'm considering putting a contract in place for a home in GG and was wondering...
What type of TV/Phone/Internet service is available? Who is the power company? How is trash pick up handled?
and finally..... is the pool really going to be ready before the summer is over.....
Thanks in advance. Josh

If you are a TV fanatic - go with Dish/Direct (but make sure you clear your placement of the dish with Elm Street - they are very flexible..but want the plan).
Many of us are part of the Kent Island Yacht Club - $350 for pool and daytime bar membership. Pool is TBD when they get the final permits.
And as a side note - there is a better than 50% chance our curb side trash pick-up will be reduced to 1 time a year within the next year. The Commisioners have suggested going to a KI gov't run curb side pick-up. The cost would be embedded in your sewer bill.
For the record, I was on the subcommittee that debated this item and was opposed to the gov't run curbside option. The commissioners believe this will reduce impact to the transfer stations, ultimately reducing cost to the County. My budgetary background disagrees.

we r closing in a couple weeks and i would like to followup on this... in terms of directv how long did it take to get approval on a satellite...does this mean i have to have dtv come out twice just to get an estimate of location first and not get services that day?!?! how long does this delay things as we want services stat! my last hoa had no say on it..
there is no choice for electric supplier??
saw post on reducing garbage services....we r coming from an area where services were provided by municipalities - no county run programs each city handled its own things and really like the way that works...if KI is trying to go the once a week route with trash it is nice in theory from a budget standpoint but from a homeowner living in close proximity to neighbors (especially in this development where lots are TIGHT) in the summertime it is not enough! summertime should warrant twice a week pickup for sanitary reasons..i have not had a chance to read the rules on garbage placement, cans required etc...but would love to know where to voice this with KI.. also is this not part of HOA??

DirectTv - You could probably figure out where you want the dish right now and complete the paperwork. I'd submit you just look at where we all put our dishes and have Direct come out and install it in one of the places that we have used. Then submit the paperwork. Most of us didn't submit the paperwork and we got warning letters. I don't think you should have problems.
There are other electric providers. I will tell you though, being a financial analyst myself, I haven't found a better deal. You still have to play Delmarva for the transport, not the generation. Most of the 'competitors' are either green or have another gimmic. If that's important - change it.
As for the trash pick-up. Welcome to small county life. For the record, I as part of the Task Force, was the singular voice against a Country run trash service. Keep in mind, QAC does not have a trash program right now - it's all private. Most people in this country take their trash to a transfer station, unless they pay for private service.
The Commisioners and others on the Task Force (as well as I) wanted to reduce transfer station costs. I disagreed in principal to the new curbside KI only service. However, they felt that one way to reduce Transfer Station costs was to initiate curbeside pick-up in the most populated area (Kent Island). This is a 'plus' for non-curbside residents right now (and quite frankly for most other communities with one-day-a-week pick-up). In the GG - we have great service twice a week - so for us, it's a negative.
I am a Democrat - I believe in Gov't services supporting the community. However, these Commissioners (a set of Republicans) and I were on opposite sides of this issue. I argued with them that they were elected on a platform of smaller Gov't. Adding additional services and taxes is not appropriate right now.
The bigger issue with the County is a $34M shortfall on a $110M budget. $45M is tied up in public schools and can't be touched. That's where the Task Force came to play. We had to determine how to Cut $34M from $75M. Property Taxes are rising .12 to support the short-fall and many services are being cut. Country services and quality is going to look extremely different in 2012 due to this short fall.
If they run a County Trash program on KI - I am doubtful we still could get additional service pick-up. To be honest, I don't want County service. But if we get it - I don't to pay double bills. The cans they give us are very large. We have three medium kids - and we typically don't fill to capacity the large can (even when we only put it out once a week). Regardless, the program won't commence for a year (I think).
If you want to express your displeasure - it's not with Elm Street or the builders. This is a County function and you should reach out to the Commissioners.
I'll be happy to talk further and provide you some talking points if you want. Nicole and I are at 127 John Gibson. Feel free to stop by.

If you are a TV fanatic - go with Dish/Direct (but make sure you clear your placement of the dish with Elm Street - they are very flexible..but want the plan). Seems like feast or famine from what I can tell. I have Verizon FIOS now and it is fantastic. DTV is TV only, right? No internet? Many of us are part of the Kent Island Yacht Club - $350 for pool and daytime bar membership. Pool is TBD when they get the final permits. Where is the KIYC? Is that monthly, and is there a initiation fee? And as a side note - there is a better than 50% chance our curb side trash pick-up will be reduced to 1 time a year within the next year. We used to have FIOS..until we moved here. part of the deal moving here, we realized..is we lose some of the luxuries of the metro area. But what we do gain is the beautiful island. I think you'd be happy with Direct..I don't miss fios much now. Direct is trying to do a lot of the fios thing.
No initiation at the KIYC this year. It's right before the Kent Narrows bridge. Five minute trip to and two minute trip back. Others use the Mears Point in Grasonville.

I think I'm just going to go over to the pool construction with a whip and a bull horn and see if I can't get it finished a little faster.

Everyone see Mike's latest post- End of July completion. Mike's very hesitant to give dates, the fact he's willing to use a date now leads me to believe he's relatively serious.
